When Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Popular Photo Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the iconic shoreline as her back yard. On a recent weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, detected cracking sounds echoing around the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw signaled something was wrong.

As she stood on the avenue, talking to a couple who had run up the incline still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up at her rear. The person was a rescuer, dashing to Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was the only one moving in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He moved at something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many acts of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, law enforcement and medical teams treating dozens of the injured.

Community Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the scene of the violence becoming a makeshift hospital. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen helping out, including entering the water to rescue people needing help.

After the attack, messages of support flooded in. A social media message expressed gratitude for the responders who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over darkness”.

The group of beach patrol later shared a communication, saying they were “processing what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the team commented. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it supports those involved.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the team acted heroically from the instant the incident commenced through to late that night.

“We have heard so many emotional accounts, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” commented a council representative.

“The team demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned coastlines safe for the public, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and process the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much good we have witnessed in the presence of such evil.”
