The New Mayor Pledges a 'New Era' for NYC in First Address
On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious start to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.
Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my principles for worry of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.
The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Free childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Challenges
The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.
The Core Challenges of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
