A person who laced candy with sedative and provided them to minors at a summer program in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two young males who were nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight children and an older person became sick at the location in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from that region, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the courthouse on recently.

However, he denied a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was involving a young boy.

The accused was kept in jail ahead of a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, outlined Ruben's offending to the court.

She explained his those affected were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer program which he managed.

The defendant conducted a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and ask them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings Ruben had engaged in this activity with the children "for many years", and minors had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She stated the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had worries in summer 2025.

The prosecutor added: "Recently" his stepson had worries about the activities, with valid cause.

"They decided to have a look in the individual's items."

The legal counsel stated objects including lubricant, petroleum jelly and injection devices were discovered, and his stepchild alerted the police about his concerns.

She explained the defendant went on to engage in the "treat game" with six youngsters that night - July 26th - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Authorities" had not responded by that time," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the situation.

The prosecutor stated the children were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the family member notified the law enforcement again.

She said Ruben then conducted the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
