The distinctive yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us verify the footage.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
