Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio
The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, but then he admitted that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return
One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
